ENGINEERING INTERN PROGRAM FOR TECHNOLOGY-BASED COMPANIES IN ARKANSAS

STUDENT INFORMATION

WHAT IS THE PROGRAM?

The Engineering Intern Program for Technology-Based Companies in Arkansas is a partnership between the University of Arkansas College of Engineering and the state's technology- based companies.

Our goal is simple - to encourage you to remain in Arkansas upon graduation to help develop technology-based companies in the state.

The program is designed to offer qualified engineering students the opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job experience in engineering and business. In addition, the relationship between the participating student and employer can provide long term growth for both.

Junior or senior engineering students can participate. You will work from 20 to 40 hours per week during the fall, spring, or summer terms. With the company's approval, you can return for a second term. You will receive a $1000 scholarship from the College for each term you participate.

Your class load during the internship can vary from no classes to being enrolled full time, depending on the workload specified by the participating company. For example, if the internship offered by the company is a traditional co-op or summer job, you may work full time while taking little or no course work. If the internship offered by the company is a 20-hour per week part-time position, you may be able to take a full class load.

Selected companies throughout the state will be participating. They are technology-based companies that will offer program participants higher level positions than jobs normally associated with student employment.

To date, more than 60 percent of the program’s interns have taken full-time positions with their participating company.

BENEFITS

·      Possible creation of a permanent position with an Arkansas company after graduation.

·      Job experience at a higher level than most co-op or summer jobs, which can positively affect future employment opportunities.

·      Potential for growth with a developing company, possibly resulting in partnership or equity in the company.

·      Being the recipient of a very selective award.

·      Help in career decision making by allowing you to experience a possible career path.

·      Course credit via application of a job-related engineering problem to your senior design requirements.

HAVE QUESTIONS?

How much is the scholarship?

A $1000 cash scholarship is awarded for the first term you work in the program. If the intern wishes and the employer thinks the intern is a candidate for employment after graduation, the scholarship is renewed for a second term.

Do I have to find the job?

If you are working for or have arranged to work for a technology-based company, you can apply for the internship if the company nominates you for the position. Applicants chosen as potential interns who have not already arranged for employment are referred for interviews for open positions with participating companies. A successful interview will result in a job acceptance and receipt of the program scholarship.

How many interns are selected?

On average there will be ten interns at any given time. Two to four new internships will normally be awarded for each fall, spring, or summer term.

What are the GPA requirements?

Applicants should have a GPA of at least 2.8.

Am I eligible if receiving other financial aid?

Yes. The scholarships for this program are independent of other scholarship considerations.
