Award Will Help Researchers Develop Novel Method of Storing Thermal Energy in Concrete

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Engineering researchers at the University of Arkansas will receive a $770,000 award from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a novel method of storing thermal energy in concrete. The award and research project are part of the federal government’s initiative to develop technology for low-cost energy storage of solar power.

National Center for Reliable Electric Power Transmission Dedicates New Building

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Rep. John Boozman helped the University of Arkansas National Center for Reliable Electric Power Transmission dedicate its new facility on Friday, Oct. 31, at the university’s Engineering Research Center in south Fayetteville. During the dedication, the university announced receipt of a $1 million gift from the American Electric Power Foundation to enhance the center’s research into new applications to improve the nation’s electricity distribution.

Researchers Use Nanowires to Develop Neural Probe That Will Limit Damage to Cells and Biological Tissue

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Engineering researchers at the University of Arkansas have developed a neural probe that demonstrates significantly greater electrical charge storage capacity than all other neural prosthetic devices. More charge storage capacity means the device can stimulate nerves and tissues with less damage and sense neural signals with better sensitivity.

Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Center Brings Wallace Forbes to the College of Engineering

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Center will present guest lecturer Wallace Forbes, the president of the Forbes Investors Advisory Institute, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 in Bell Engineering Center, Room 2282. Forbes will present a brief talk titled “Engineers Have a World Full of Opportunity.” Following the presentation, he will open the floor to questions on topics ranging from engineering opportunities to the current global economic situation.

Civil Engineering Faculty Member Wins Prestigious Golden Eagle Award

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- Jack Buffington, who serves as a research professor in the civil engineering department and as the associate director of the Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Center at the University of Arkansas, will be honored by the Society of American Military Engineers with the prestigious Golden Eagle Award at a ceremony in Arlington, Va. on March 27, 2009. Since 1996, the society has honored two outstanding Americans each year for contributions to the engineering profession and national security.

Researcher Awarded Grant to Develop Technology for Generating Insulin-Producing Cells to Treat Diabetes

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –
Kaiming Ye, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Arkansas, has received a $244,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a new technology that will generate glucose-responsive, insulin-producing cells from human embryonic stem cells. The research will lead to a new generation of cell-based therapies for treating diabetes.

Enrollment at UofA Sets Records for Freshmen, Minorities and Total Students

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Enrollment at the University of Arkansas has reached another milestone with more than 19,000 students enrolling at the state’s largest institution of higher education. Total enrollment at the end of the 11th day of classes was 19,191 students, a new campus record.

Modeling Health Care Logistics in a Virtual World

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –
Inefficient health care delivery – not patient care but business and support operations, including logistics and supply-chain networks, database- and inventory-management systems and patient-information systems – contributes significantly to rising costs and compromised quality of care and patient safety. To address this problem, University of Arkansas researchers are using Second Life, the popular three-dimensional virtual world in which people work and play online, as a platform for modeling efficient health care delivery.

Loewer Named to Hall of Distinction at Louisiana State University

Otto J. Loewer of Fayetteville, Ark., has been named to the Louisiana State University College of Engineering’s Hall of Distinction. Loewer, founding director of the University of Arkansas Economic Development Institute and professor in the biological and agricultural engineering department, graduated from LSU with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering in 1968 and a master’s degree in agricultural engineering in 1970.

Arkansas Researcher to Receive $1.3 Million NIH Grant to Study Vascular Complications of Diabetes

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –
A biomedical engineering researcher at the University of Arkansas will receive a $1.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the causes of endothelial cell dysfunction, which significantly contributes to many diabetes-related vascular complications and cardiovascular disorders. The research will help medical researchers better understand the molecular mechanisms for endothelial cell dysfunction and will guide the development of new therapies for diabetes-related vascular problems.

Three University of Arkansas Students Named as Goldwater Scholars

For the sixth consecutive year, three University of Arkansas students have been awarded prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships. Rachel Thomas of Fort Smith, Whitney Gammill of Maumelle and Jordan Greenlee of Oak Ridge, Tenn., are among 321 students in the nation to be named Goldwater Scholars. They will each receive a $7,500 scholarship. All three are juniors and students in the university Honors College.

Innovative Warehouse Design Concept Implemented by Wisconsin Generator Manufacturer

An innovative, alternative warehouse-design concept developed by a University of Arkansas researcher and his colleague at Auburn University has been implemented by a Wisconsin generator manufacturer. In its newly designed warehouse in Whitewater, Wis., Generac Power Systems built a non-traditional aisle and rack system based on concepts created by Russell Meller, professor of industrial engineering, and Kevin Gue, engineering professor at Auburn.

University of Arkansas Installing Supercomputer; 'Star of Arkansas' to Be State's Fastest

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Scientists and engineers at the University of Arkansas will soon be able to conduct complex research projects using a new supercomputer system, dubbed the "Star of Arkansas." Once it is installed later this spring, the Star of Arkansas will be the fastest and most powerful computer in the state, allowing researchers to design vastly more complicated experiments, models and simulations than previously possible. The supercomputer will let scientists and engineers push the boundaries of knowledge in subjects ranging from bird flu to weather prediction.

University to receive $4 million nanotechnology grant from the state

University of Arkansas Pre-College Programs to Host Engineering Challenge Competition

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - More than 120 high school students will be on the University of Arkansas campus Saturday, March 29, to participate in the annual Engineering Challenge competition sponsored by the University of Arkansas pre-college programs office and the College of Engineering. Students in this year's event will compete in four individual categories that include a Styrofoam boat race, mousetrap car race, egg drop competition and balsa wood bridge design. Individual competitions begin at 10:15 a.m. in the Health Physical Education and Recreation Building (gym 1, gym 3 and natatorium).
