Civil Engineering Professor Receives University's Top Teaching Honor

Norm Dennis, professor of civil engineering, was named winner of the Charles and Nadine Baum Faculty Teaching Award for 2008 at the General Commencement Ceremony on May 10. This is the university's most prestigious teaching award.

Arkansas Researcher to Receive $1.3 Million NIH Grant to Study Vascular Complications of Diabetes

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –
A biomedical engineering researcher at the University of Arkansas will receive a $1.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the causes of endothelial cell dysfunction, which significantly contributes to many diabetes-related vascular complications and cardiovascular disorders. The research will help medical researchers better understand the molecular mechanisms for endothelial cell dysfunction and will guide the development of new therapies for diabetes-related vascular problems.

Three University of Arkansas Students Named as Goldwater Scholars

For the sixth consecutive year, three University of Arkansas students have been awarded prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships. Rachel Thomas of Fort Smith, Whitney Gammill of Maumelle and Jordan Greenlee of Oak Ridge, Tenn., are among 321 students in the nation to be named Goldwater Scholars. They will each receive a $7,500 scholarship. All three are juniors and students in the university Honors College.

Innovative Warehouse Design Concept Implemented by Wisconsin Generator Manufacturer

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -
An innovative, alternative warehouse-design concept developed by a University of Arkansas researcher and his colleague at Auburn University has been implemented by a Wisconsin generator manufacturer. In its newly designed warehouse in Whitewater, Wis., Generac Power Systems built a non-traditional aisle and rack system based on concepts created by Russell Meller, professor of industrial engineering, and Kevin Gue, engineering professor at Auburn.

VHA Inc. Becomes Strategic Partner in Center for Innovation in Healthcare Logistics

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - VHA Inc., the national health care alliance that serves more than 1,400 hospitals nationwide, has become a strategic partner in the University of Arkansas Center for Innovation in Healthcare Logistics. As a strategic partner, VHA has agreed to contribute $1,000,000 over five years to fund the center's work to develop innovative solutions to increase efficiency in the health care supply chain.

University of Arkansas Installing Supercomputer; 'Star of Arkansas' to Be State's Fastest

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Scientists and engineers at the University of Arkansas will soon be able to conduct complex research projects using a new supercomputer system, dubbed the "Star of Arkansas." Once it is installed later this spring, the Star of Arkansas will be the fastest and most powerful computer in the state, allowing researchers to design vastly more complicated experiments, models and simulations than previously possible. The supercomputer will let scientists and engineers push the boundaries of knowledge in subjects ranging from bird flu to weather prediction.

ROHM Co. Ltd. Joins College of Engineering to Develop High Power Silicon-Carbide Integrated Power Modules

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - ROHM Co. Ltd.
Dr.Mantooth
has signed an agreement with the University of Arkansas' National Center for Reliable Electric Power Transmission and Arkansas Power Electronics International Inc. for a collaborative project that will result in the development of high power silicon-carbide integrated power modules. In addition to this agreement, ROHM has signed a separate agreement to become a full industry-member of the center.

Industrial Engineering Professor Honored with John L. Imhoff Chair in Industrial Engineering

Edward A. Pohl, associate professor in industrial engineering, was named as the second recipient of the John L. Imhoff Chair in Industrial Engineering at a recognition ceremony on Jan. 18 at Bell Engineering Center.

University to receive $4 million nanotechnology grant from the state

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Gov. Mike Beebe announced today that nanotechnology researchers at the University of Arkansas will receive a $4 million grant from the state's General Improvement Fund. The money will benefit research and facilities in the College of Engineering and the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

University of Arkansas Pre-College Programs to Host Engineering Challenge Competition

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - More than 120 high school students will be on the University of Arkansas campus Saturday, March 29, to participate in the annual Engineering Challenge competition sponsored by the University of Arkansas pre-college programs office and the College of Engineering. Students in this year's event will compete in four individual categories that include a Styrofoam boat race, mousetrap car race, egg drop competition and balsa wood bridge design. Individual competitions begin at 10:15 a.m. in the Health Physical Education and Recreation Building (gym 1, gym 3 and natatorium).
