The College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas and the Springdale High School pre-engineering program have partnered to offer a summer engineering and math summer camp for Springdale middle school and junior high girls. The program will kick off this summer. Dean Ashok Saxena and Carol Gattis, director of recruitment, retention and diversity, along with several University of Arkansas colleagues presented information about the Engineering and Math Summer Day Camp for Girls to the Springdale School Board on Tuesday night. The program is an engineering recruitment and diversity initiative focused on creating an interest in science and engineering among females, a group that is severely underrepresented in engineering fields.
Next week is Engine Week – a week set aside to celebrate the engineers and engineering in our lives. Several engineering organizations have scheduled activities to be held in the atrium of Bell Engineering Center. Here is a list of activities and sponsors. Everyone is invited to attend.

Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering honor society, is selling review manuals for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. Place your order now to make sure you have the materials in time for all the review sessions. The FE exam will be held this semester on April 21. Review sessions for the exam will start in early March. Orders take about two weeks to arrive and will be placed in groups. Ordering now will allow us to compile a large enough order to get a shipment in by early March. There is a study manual for the general test in the morning and another for the discipline-specific test in the afternoon. The cost is $60 for the general manual and $40 for the discipline-specific manual. Please contact either David Clement dtcleme@uark.edu or Doug Fellenz dfellen@uark.edu to place an order. Cash or check will be accepted. If you cannot make one of these times, e-mail us and we will set up a time to meet.
Brian Mattingly was awarded the Mack-Blackwell Transportation Center Student of the Year Award. Brian worked on two biodiesel projects ( MBTC 2052, 2058) culminating in his M.S. Chemical Engineering degree in July 2006. Dr. R. E. Babcock, and Dr. Ed Clausen, professors of the Ralph E. Martin Department of Chemical Engineering, directed Brian’s research. During his time as a student, in addition to his M.S. thesis, Brian contributed heavily to the MBTC project technical completion reports, made poster presentations at both the 2004 and the 2005 Mack-Blackwell Transportation Center Annual Projects Review Symposia, and delivered a technical paper at the 2005 International Petroleum Environmental Conference in Houston, Texas. Brian is a self-motivated individual. He planned and executed the laboratory experiments on the MBTC projects with minimum oversight and supervised hourly personnel on the projects as well. For the spring 2006 semester, Brian was accepted as one of nine U.S. graduate students to the Renewable Resources and Clean Technology International Graduate Exchange Program from January 2006 – June 2006. During this time, Brian studied under Dr. Roland Verhe, renowned biofuels professor, at the University of Gent in Belgium. Brian also served as an industrial coop student researcher with the international chemical company, DeSmet Ballestra, in Brussels, Belgium. These international appointments were very prestigious and highly acclaimed. Brian is currently serving as Assistant Plant Manager for Earth Biofuels, Inc. at their Durant, Oklahoma facility.
